LINUS has become an important
benchmark to assess a students ability in English, Mathematics and Bahasa
Malaysia. The LINUS English program which was launched last year, inspired the
teaching team at SK. Kampong Tengah to create a LINUS area at their school to
help students, who have little knowledge of English.
SK. Kampong Tengah has limited space, so the idea of a LINUS corner rather than a room, became the only realistic option. The challange was how to make this corner accessable to all students, and an exciting place to visit on their own. The team decided to develop the space around the themes, “Jungle Animals,’ and “Sea life,” which could captivate the imaginations of visiting students.
Starting with simple materials like a mounting board, stickers, coloured pens, and paper. The initial
challenge was to re-create these themes to be as realistic, as possible, and
comfortably fit into a small space. After a mornings design work, with the
teachers creating an authentic jungle, and underwater scene, the themes, and
the corner was ready.
Now, the simple idea of a LINUS
corner had grown into an exciting, and creative part of the school, where all
students irrespective of their English language abilities, can marvel at the colorful themes, as well as discover essential vocabulary needed to overcome some
of the challenges of the LINUS test.
After meeting the teachers at
SK Kampong Tengah, they said, “The flexibility of the LINUS Corner, also allows us to add more themes, and activities, throughout
the school year, and we hope other
schools with similar space problems, can learn from our own experience of
creating a LINUS Corner.”
